How to set up a Google Analytics account and link it to your WordPress website

As the owner of a website, you want to understand how people are interacting with your site. Google Analytics is a powerful tool that can provide you with valuable insights into your website traffic and user behavior. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of setting up a Google Analytics account and linking it to your WordPress website.

Step 1: Create a Google Analytics Account

To create a Google Analytics account, you need to have a Google account. If you don’t have one, go ahead and create it. Once you’ve logged in, go to the Google Analytics homepage and click on the “Sign Up” button.

On the next screen, you will need to provide some basic information about your website, such as the website name, URL, and time zone. Make sure to read and accept the terms and conditions before clicking on the “Create” button.

Step 2: Set up Your Tracking Code

After you’ve created your account, Google Analytics will provide you with a tracking code. This tracking code needs to be added to your WordPress website. There are different ways to add the tracking code, but the easiest way is by using a plugin.

One of the most popular plugins for adding Google Analytics to a WordPress website is MonsterInsights. To install this plugin, go to your WordPress dashboard, click on “Plugins,” and then click on “Add New.” Search for “MonsterInsights,” install and activate it.

Once you’ve installed the plugin, you need to connect it to your Google Analytics account. To do this, go to Insights > Settings in your WordPress dashboard. On the settings page, click on the “Authenticate with your Google account” button.

Follow the prompts to allow MonsterInsights to access your Google Analytics account. Once you’ve done this, you can select the website you want to track and click on the “Complete Authentication” button.

Step 3: Verify Your Tracking Code

After you’ve connected MonsterInsights to your Google Analytics account, you need to verify that the tracking code is working properly. To do this, go to the Insights > Reports page in your WordPress dashboard. You should see a “Tracking” tab. Click on it to view the tracking status.

If the tracking code is working properly, you will see a “Tracking Code Found” message. If there’s an issue with the tracking code, you will see a message telling you what the problem is.

Step 4: Explore Your Analytics Data

Once you’ve set up Google Analytics and linked it to your WordPress website, you can start exploring your data. Go to your Google Analytics account and click on the “Reporting” tab to view your website’s analytics data.

You can view data on the number of visitors, page views, bounce rate, and much more. This data can help you understand how people are interacting with your website and identify areas where you can improve.

By following the steps outlined in this blog post, you can start tracking your website’s performance and using data to make informed decisions.  It should be noted taht all clients of Helios Web Design have Google Analytics and Google Search Console set up for them as part of the build and live deployment service.
